‘Schiphol’, oil on canvas, 200x200cm
One of Janneke Viegers specialties is the cityscape. Presenting them from an aerial perspective, or a ‘bird’s-eye-view’, over the last decade she has painted many of the world’s great cities, including New York, Moscow and Paris. She was originally inspired by aerial photography from a series made in 1986 by ‘KLM Aerocarto’. Wearing latex gloves, Viegers applies the paint to the canvas with her fingers. Jokingly she says: “I’ve got ten paintbrushes instead of just one.” She continues- “I knead the colors together on the canvas. When I made ‘Schiphol’ I applied the undercoat using lots of turpentine. That gives a good ground. You get a shiny undercoat that has a watercolor like feel to it. Most appropriate, because it’s pretty wet at Schiphol, as you see.” And why does she paint aerial perspectives of cities? “They give you a sense of context. You are in control of the situation and yet weightless, floating above.”

The Royal Palace on Dam Square, oil on canvas, 200x200cm.
The painting ‘The Royal Palace on Dam Square’ by Janneke Viegers (1952) is from the series ‘City Views’. Viegers has painted comparable views of other cities, including New York, Paris, Moscow, Amsterdam and London. She has been painting ‘from above’ –a term she uses herself- since 1980. Viegers is fascinated by fleetingness of each moment, the swiftness with which we observe and the way our own imagination colors what we see. Her bird’s-eye views capture a glimpse of a city, a vista we would otherwise only see from an airplane. She records the hustle and bustle of a metropolis, but without the crowds and cars rushing by. She focuses on architectural structures, static and motionless, and through them captures the clamor and chaos of the city.

Amsterdam School
Paintings of buildings in the “Amsterdam School” style (Dutch ‘brick’ Art Deco) as ‘fractals’, ‘strings’, wires, threads of oil paint, polished membranes oscillate, vibrating.
As in nature there are no straight lines. The space is bent, rounded, and the material made of all those bits, not nearly as hard and solid as was thought. Fluctuations in our perception.

Portrait of a child
Janneke Viegers (41)
painted: Maria (3)
For a portrait she doesn’t need more then two hours. Sitting still is not necessary; and that makes it all the easier because especially children have the tendency to ‘sabotage’ Janneke’s directives. A child like Maria is allowed to go her own way, Janneke follows her through the room, painting an ear or such when the moment and ideal angle presents itself. As portrait painter you’re actually a voyeur she feels. As she greets her subject, babbles about the weather, lays out her paint tubes and pours the coffee she is secretly already watching and studying. “I’m not so concerned with exact proportions, I try to represent the essence of my subject on the canvas. The way they move and talk is what I try to capture in color and composition. That’s why my portraits after twenty years still strongly resemble the subject” Her portraits are expressive and full of movement. In reality a nose might look different but the subject is touchingly represented. “Psychological insight: I feel how someone is put together. It is my insight in to their personality. To represent someone's character in painting is the most beautiful thing there is.” While she paints children of all ages, she prefers children of eight and above. “Then they are really obstinate and have a definite image of themselves. Meddling with the painting. “No, not that color!” they proclaim! A boy I was painting once saw me using green to represent shadow in his face. Indignant he insisted that he did not have a green face!”

Janneke Viegers paints men, women, children and animals. She paints a portrait in one afternoon. ‘”My artistic temperament works best with one sitting only. That’s how it has to be, if I continue the next day it becomes a different painting altogether.”

The Inspired Likeness
The portrait that Janneke Viegers made of the small Maria in 1993 is typical of the quick and to the point manner with which this artist captures someone. Her main purpose is to represent the character of the sitter. She paints children from birth onwards; sitting still is not necessary. Specifically it’s the way the subject moves and talks that inspire her; these say more about someone's character. A portrait in oil is more than just a moment in time, while a moment in time is all a photo can ever be. That’s why a portrait painted by Janneke will still resemble the sitter twenty years later.

That’s ME
A designer found the following the most remarkable about the portrait Janneke Viegers painted of her: “She saw exactly the things that I see in myself. For example she wanted to emphasize my legs, which I feel are very long. The result was very surprising, very much me!”
“In the beginning I felt shy, but quickly we were discussing our lives and loves. And Janneke just kept on painting - she captures you through color. And the colors fit me exactly. She has captured me in movement, voice, stature and impression. I also like it as a painting, separate from the fact that it’s a portrait of me. It’s quite different from a photograph. My portrait doesn't just show me, it’s her interpretation of me. You see the painting in it’s totality; those odd green spots on your cheek you would never accept in a photograph.”

“The first video presentation is by Janneke Viegers.
In her continuing career she has tended to stray from the worn path many times.
With the addition of this new medium: video, this visual artist has added the concept of time to her work, as well as movement and sound.
You especially notice the video because of the splendid image transitions. Visually Janneke Viegers has remained true to her own way of painting. The lively provocative impressionistic key in the paintings also dominates in this video.”

About the work of Janneke Viegers
Janneke Viegers (1952) considers herself an exact thinking, restless, person. “I’m always busy constructing, working. Only when I see my paintings from a distance, for example via the mirror in the hallway, then I realize: hey, it represents something as well!” With her (latex glove covered) hands she moulds her large, usually square, paintings. Her subject mater is the cityscape, interiors, and portraits. “But” emphasizes Viegers, “actually my work isn’t about the subject physically, rather more about it emotionally.” Her travels abroad after her studies brought her closer to the core of the Dutch painting traditions and cultural heritage. “Van Gogh and Rembrandt used color, emotion, perspective and the paint itself, there is still much to learn from them. The ‘contemporary realism’ painters and photography so popular with the Americans is nothing for me. Since the arrival of photography precision painting is no longer necessary.” Stronger still, proclaims Viegers, she paints against the tyranny of photography.
“Each time when I try to paint a city truthfully, I realize afterwards that I made again my personal portrait.” Also with human portraits her trademark textures are unmistakable. “Mid-ninety’s I did a portrait series about women, from young to old, to show that beauty isn’t limited to the young - a misconception created by photography. My so-called ‘Knie-plays’. I painted them life size, not just head and shoulders, but hands and knees included. Actually it was more about my outlook, my vision on women.
Viegers’ paintings are usually square. “That way the composition is still undetermined when I start applying the paint, I’m still free.” This freedom is important for Viegers. Starting with her interior paintings from her early period she has taken an aerial perspective, looking down from above. Her cityscapes she also paints from this same perspective, “to get some distance, to get away from the human tumult, the rushing about.”
She works in large formats. “I approach my work at a scale of one to one. That means that with an aerial vista of a city you need a substantial format. Viegers constructs her own reality. With short staccato movements she paints her subjects, applying the paint with her fingers, a very hands-on approach. “This attitude comes through not only in my paintings, but also, for example, in my video collages. I like to use different media: paintings, video-collages, drawings, and video-animation. But painting always comes first, continuously. “Every canvas is a comment on the previous one. The choice of each new subject is intuitive, but I’m always amazed at the exactitude of the results.”
